In March 2017, KIDSgala hosted a Superhero Training Academy for Jonathan Dunlap at The Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, Michigan. The event was themed around Johnny's love of superheroes. Invited guests participated in the eight different training stations: Magnificent Minds, Mighty Muscles, Strike out the Villains, Kryptonite Disposal, Brick Smash, Amazing Aim, Fancy Footwork and Batcave Tunnel Crawl. Participants received a Superhero Academy Certificate, cape and mask. Johnny's guests also enjoyed dinner, two bounce houses, a surprise visit from Captain America and magician, Jasen Magic.
Johnny, 4 years old, was diagnosed in October 2013 with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). ALL is the most common form of leukemia that occurs in children. It is characterized by the presence of too many mature white blood cells in the child's blood and bone marrow. In November 2016, Johnny was in the hospital for 2 weeks with Hemolytic-uremic Syndrome (HUS), a disease characterized by hemolytic anemia (anemia caused by destruction of red blood cells), acute kidney failure (uremia), and a low platelet count. This was caused by the chemo and it affected his kidneys and caused high blood pressure. Jonathan recently had his port removed and is no longer receiving chemo.
We were honored to celebrate Johnny at his superhero event!
